Be Prepared for Natural Disasters

In Florida Hurricane Season runs from June 1st through November 30th each year. Predictions for 2010 suggests above average storm activity, with an expected 15 named storms, 8 of which are predicted to be hurricanes. In California, earthquakes and wildfires are of major concern. Because earthquakes strike suddenly, violently and without warning, they can be a very frightening and destructive natural phenomenon. Earthquakes, and their aftershocks, can cause extensive property damage, injuries and even death. Wildfires can destroy everything in their path.

SURGE PROTECTION

Every day we get calls from merchants with terminals damaged from surges through either their electrical or telephone lines. Avoid costly down time. Installing a surge protector on your terminal, as well as your telephone and fax lines can help protect your equipment from electrical surges that often cause damage. Call us at (239) 549-5055 and order one today.

Here are some steps to take prior to an earthquake, wildfire, hurricane, tornado, or flood:

  1. Check for hazards in the home
  2. Identify safe places within the building to "ride out" the event
  3. Protect all windows and doors in your home
  4. Trim back all trees in your yard
  5. Bring outdoor furniture inside
  6. Secure boat and any other large objects that cannot be brought indoors
  7. Keep your car fully fueled
  8. Purchase enough non-perishable food, water and medication for 5-7 days per person
  9. Keep a supply of cash (small bills) at home. Banks may be closed and ATM's may not work
  10. Have a battery operated radio, and extra batteries, so that you can listen to news reports during the storm
  11. Have a family communication plan with someone out of the area to serve as a contact
  12. Gather valuables and important documents, including insurance policies, and keep with you in a waterproof container
  13. Take pictures/videos of your home, contents and possessions for insurance purposes. This will be most beneficial in the event you lose everything
  14. If you are leaving your home, disconnect power from all electronics/appliances.
  15. Educate yourself and family member before an event happens, and have an emergency communication plan
  16. CHECK YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE! Insurance is not available if there is an active named storm, and there is a 30 day waiting period for flood insurance.

If you plan on evacuating in the event of a storm, know your hurricane evacuation routes. Leave as early as possible. It will help you avoid traffic jams, and you will have a better choice of hotels. If you have pets, be sure to make plans for them as well. Helpful websites for disaster preparedness:

IRS Reporting Requirements

The Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008 included the enactment of Section 6050W of the IRS Code. This is an important new measure that requires obligated reporting entities to report the gross amounts of their merchant customers' payment card and third party network transactions to the IRS.
